GEO, Generative Engine Optimization

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of getting AI search engines that generate answers directly - ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews - to cite your content. It is a new optimization field that goes beyond ranking competition, aiming to appear as a source inside AI-generated answers.

How It Differs From SEO

Traditional SEO targets top placement in the SERP. GEO targets having your content cited as evidence inside a single AI-generated answer paragraph.

User behavior has changed. People moved from scanning ten blue links to reading one AI-summarized answer. Now "citation" matters as much as "ranking position."

What Content AI Engines Cite

Generative engines build answers with a RAG structure. They retrieve documents through search and weave the most credible fragments into the answer. To get cited, your content must meet these conditions:

  • Lead with the conclusion - Put the answer to the question at the start of the paragraph. Machines extract it easily.
  • Evidence and sources - The clearer your statistics, citations, and expert opinions, the stronger your EEAT signals.
  • Machine-readable structure - Structured data and a clear heading hierarchy help AI understand your content.
  • Question-answer format - Content that directly addresses real user questions gets cited well. This is where it connects with Answer Engine Optimization (AEO).

It Does Not Replace SEO

GEO and SEO are not competitors - they are complementary. Most generative engines still build answers based on search indexes and crawling and indexing results.

In other words, solid SEO fundamentals are required for AI to find and cite your content. GEO adds one more layer on top of SEO: a "format that AI reads and cites well."

In practice, we recommend building answerable documents through content SEO and organizing AI access with llms.txt.

Notes

  • GEO performance is tracked by AI citation share, not by ranking.
  • The more a topic falls under YMYL, the more source credibility determines whether you get cited.
  • 238lab combines SEO and GEO into a single axis, designing a structure that gets cited across both search and AI answers.
