EEAT

Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness

EEAT stands for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness. It is Google's core framework for judging content quality. In December 2022, Experience was added to the existing EAT, expanding it to EEAT. It applies more strictly in YMYL fields like health and finance that affect people's lives.

The Four Elements

  • Experience - First-hand information from direct use and experience. Real user reviews and on-site photos are signals.
  • Expertise - The depth of knowledge the author holds on the topic.
  • Authoritativeness - The degree to which the author and site are recognized in the industry. External mentions and backlinks are the evidence.
  • Trustworthiness - Accuracy, transparency, and safety. This is the most important axis, which Google names as the center of EEAT.

If trustworthiness collapses, the evaluation drops even when the other three elements are strong.

Not a Direct Score, but a Direction

EEAT is not a single ranking score assigned by the algorithm. It is an evaluation standard in Google's Search Quality Rater Guidelines. Raters score search results, and that data feeds back into algorithm improvements. So EEAT is closer to a compass showing the long-term direction of SEO.

How to Build EEAT in Practice

  • Expose author information - State the author's name, bio, and credentials.
  • Cite sources - Link statistics and quotes to reliable primary sources.
  • Highlight first-hand experience - Include directly tested data and photos.
  • Secure external reputation - Gather backlinks and mentions from high-trust sites.
  • Ensure transparency - Disclose contact details, the operating entity, and update dates.

These signals come through more clearly when you specify author and organization information with structured data.

EEAT in the GEO and AI Era

In a GEO environment, EEAT carries even more weight. AI prioritizes trust signals when choosing which sources to cite in its answers. To be cited in AI Overviews and Answer Engine Optimization, your expertise and trustworthiness must be verified. 238lab designs SEO and GEO together so that EEAT signals work across both search and AI.

Notes

  • EEAT is not a short-term tactic but a reputation asset that accumulates over time.
  • The more a topic falls under YMYL, the more author trust verification becomes essential.
